Tom
Curren has worked with senior executives and leading companies for 30
years.
- Solving core business problems. With a concentration
in marketing, Tom has been a Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey and
an advertising Account Executive for Procter & Gamble, where he
developed the rigor and insight to solve core business problems, analyze
opportunities, and deal with business complexity in a variety of settings.
- Top Management Experience. Throughout the 1980s,
Tom served as Senior VP of Corporate Planning and Business Development
at Marriott Corporation, helping the company grow from $1 billion to
$7 billion.
- Whole Systems change. Over the last 15 years, Tom
has focused on the development and application of traditional and leading
edge techniques to resolve issues at an individual, work group and whole
systems level. He works with clients on practical ways to improve both
the decision-driven and behavior-dependent aspects of performance.
- Professional Coaching. Tom is trained as a coach
and senior “thinking partner” and has worked with dozens of CEOs and
other top level executives. In addition to advising based on his own
experiences, he helps executives discover their own answers through
the use of powerful questions, reflective listening, challenging of
assumptions, and holding executives accountable for delivering on what
they say they want and need.

- MBA Wharton Graduate Division, 1967. Finance and
Marketing, with honors. Also a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford,
Connecticut.
- Entrepreneur, 1966-67. Co-founded Allen Curren Electronics,
designing and manufacturing psychedelic lighting systems to discotheques
in Philadelphia and New York.
- U.S. Naval Officer, 1968-71. Operating off Vietnam.
- Compton Advertising, for Procter & Gamble, 1971-73.
Learned the fundamentals of packaged goods marketing as Account Executive
on Cascade Dishwashing Detergent.
- McKinsey & Company, 1973-77. Senior Engagement
Manager. Built basic consulting skills, with an emphasis in analytical
problem solving. Specializing in marketing and strategy. New York Office.
- Marriott Corporation, SVP Strategy Development,
1977-90. Helped the Company grow from $1 Billion to $7 billion in the
1980's. Among the top ten executives in the company. Member of the Finance
Committee.
- New Venture Manager, Courtyard by Marriott, 1982-84.
A two year assignment to create and launch the most preferred hotel
product in the middle market.
- Center for the Study of Human Relationships, 1988-94.
Royal Oak, Maryland. Individual, couples and group process experience
and training.
- The Hawthorne Group (Early Phase), 1990-95. Founder
of a consulting boutique focused on strategy, group dynamics and coaching.
Early work focused on strategy development.
- Expanding the Tool Kit, 1990-ongoing. Continued
the on-going process of learning, synthesizing and packaging the most
relevant tools and methodologies for strategic thinking or organizational
alignment. (5-10 days annually in this type of training). Examples:
creative thinking methodologies, conflict management, polarity management,

- McKinsey Change Center, New York, 1995-97. As a Fellow
at the McKinsey Change Center, participated in a two year effort to
understand and apply leading edge technologies for managing change in
large organizations. Have applied and expanded upon this foundation
in client work over the subsequent decade.
