Sometimes we've called it a reunion – because that emphaszes the coming-back-together of this sprawling group of people who may have spent nine months with each other or who may have never met, but yet feel ever so familiar.
And sometimes we've called it a retreat – because that emphasises that many of us want to gather with a shared commitment to practice.
Like GTC… this gathering is both. This email is an invitation to you to come and entwine those two strands and explore the space beyond GTC.
To explore what's next.
The Pacific Integral faculty and their collaborators, who spend a lot of time hosting collective spaces – so-called "we-spaces" – have plotted a map of how the space develops with experience. Without giving you a thesis, here's a sketch:
The heart of this gathering will be to explore together the specific shift from Awakened We-Space to Evolutionary We-Space.
So what is an evolutionary we-space?
Well, that's partly what we'll be exploring together on this retreat.
An evolutionary we-space arises when participants are able to rest in meta-awareness while each brings their unique perspective into dialogue in service of something larger than any one individual. From that engagement, genuinely new understanding, creativity and coordinated action can emerge.
In a sense, it's a conscious practice of being together that cultivates a field greater than the sum of its parts.
So why does this matter? Why would you bother?
Because there are very few places where people intentionally gather to explore this way of being together.
Many of you probably caught glimpses of this during GTC. There were moments when the group rested together in meta-awareness—moments of stillness where we began to trust what wanted to emerge, rather than immediately trying to make something happen.
This retreat is an invitation to take that one step further.
The realization of meta-awareness is not the endpoint. It becomes the ground from which our different perspectives interact to generate new understanding, creativity and coordinated action. The movement is from shared realization to shared creation.
It asks each of us to notice when we've become identified with our own position, to return to meta-awareness, to speak authentically rather than defensively, to remain genuinely curious about perspectives different from our own, and to become more interested in what is trying to emerge than in being right.
When a group can practice in this way, something becomes possible that isn't usually available when we're alone.
We often begin to see ourselves more clearly. Hidden gifts become more visible. Shadow becomes more workable because it can be met within relationship rather than in isolation. We reconnect with what feels most alive in us, what we're here to contribute, and what life may be inviting from us next.
Sometimes what emerges serves an individual. Sometimes it serves the whole group. Often it becomes something that none of us could have predicted beforehand.
In that sense, we become co-creators with life itself, participating in what is wanting to emerge rather than simply trying to control it.
And alongside all of that, there is something wonderfully human about it.
It's also a chance to slow down. To spend time in nature. To laugh a lot. To dance. To share good food and perhaps a glass of wine. To reconnect with old friends and deepen relationships that began during GTC.
Because while the retreat is exploring an evolutionary we-space, it's also about remembering that transformation doesn't only happen through profound insight. Sometimes it happens through genuine conversation, shared silence, joyful play, and simply being fully present with one another.
How is that going to work?
While our invitation is to hold this inquiry as the core of the gathering, we all also want time for everything else. As well as walks, dancing, food, nature and time to hang out, many of us have learned things that we want to share.
Previous reunions have tried to allow time for open space and times for collective practice. This time we will try a different structure that honours patterns that seem to have worked best.
A small group of us have volunteered to hold the core inquiry throughout the entire time of the retreat (except when we're asleep). We will be sitting somewhere all the time, holding to this inquiry, whatever else is going on. We may take individual breaks, but together we will keep that central zone warm throughout the weekend.
The plan is for everyone to join us at the start of the day, and possibly at the end in the ongoing inquiry into "what is an evolutionary we-space?"
But as you feel moved, individuals and groups can shift out of that inquiry into their own gyre in the open space around the inquiry group – to walk, to chat, to run a workshop, whatever moves you – returning, as and when you wish, with what you've found.
Together we re-braid your thread into the we-space that's been staying warm while you soared.
… and then what comes of that, we shall see.
